Die Welle aka The Wave
No, it’s not pronounced ‘die-well’ but ‘dii-ye vell’. It’s German. It’s a German movie based on a true story that happened in America, back in the 60′s. The students, as most of us are – were deeply convinced that fascism like that of Hitler and Mussolini would not resurface in liberal democratic countries. The teacher is determined to prove them wrong.
Friendships are tested as the class embraces 'The Wave', a new ideology brought by their teacher - Herr Wenger. Karo (left) played by Jennifer Ulrich and Lisa, played by Cristina do Rego
So starts a social experiment…and the students were turned into fascists in a dangerously fun and motivating way (reminds me of Kursus Biro Tatanegara in Malaysia, but they lack the fun and motivation – only the brainwashing part is left).
If you are one of those who had always been wondering why many Germans in the 1930′s voted and joined the Nazi Party – well, this may shade some light. Specially for those who are interested in social issues and policy studies – as well as the German movies fans. And of course - hot stars are playing the lead! My pick? Jennifer Ulrich rocks!
As you may have noticed by now: I’m one heck of a Germancentric. Long live Merkel!
And here is the movie from Youtube (with English subtitle):
